What is Dim Sim?

The History
With the expansion of trade between Europeans and the Chinese, frequent travellers along the Silk Road looked for resting stops during their journey. To accommodate this growing need teahouses opened up along side the route. Traditionally considered unfavourable to have food with tea breaks, the discovery that tea aids digestion resulted in the creation of snacks to complement the tea. This was the birth of the widely popular Dim Sim tradition.

The meaning of ‘Dim Sim’
The word ‘Dim Sim’ is from the Chinese dialect Cantonese. It literally means ‘Touch the Heart’ or ‘Order till Your Heart’s Content’. In our modern society, the wide choices of Dim Sim restaurants and menu selection allow people to order until their heart is content - people often walk out feeling extremely full!

What is Dim Sim?
These days the concept of Dim Sim is viewed as a brunch held usually between 11am-3pm. Often a favourite pastime spent with family and friends, it consist of constant servings of tea and small portions of savoury or sweet dishes. These dishes including meat and vegetarian dumplings, buns, rice noodle rolls, steamed vegetables and desserts like custard tarts. Tea is sipped throughout this meal, aiding digestion and maintaining the tradition.

Etiquette for this tradition
Dishes are served in small portions on a bamboo tray, which is placed on the centre of the table and people serve themselves accordingly. In the Dim Sim tradition, hot carts are wheeled around the restaurant to serve food to patrons, the heated carts keeping the dishes warm, the wheeling of food around keeping the fun in this wonderful pastime.

How does a date work?

Duration
Each person has 5 minutes per date, dating 10-12 people.

Courting Red Kit
On the evening of an event, everyone receives a Courting Red Kit containing their Match, Date and Prompt Cards, and some other goodies inside.

Match Card
On a Courting Red Match Card, you write down the name of the date and indicate yes or no to whether you would like to maintain contact with them.

Date Card
The Courting Red Date Card is where you can write some notes about each date. This will help you distinguish the great individuals you have met that evening. You can take this card away as a reference.

Prompt Card
The Courting Red Prompt Card assists you in developing conversation, giving you some interesting ideas about topics you may wish to discuss.

on Saturday 10th May 2008 at Zilver Restuarant.
